Club News - Street Collection(s) 2008

June 2008

On Saturday 7th & 14th of June 2008, the Rotary Club of West Woodspring held street collections in Weston's High Street in support of Shelter Box (www.shelterbox.org).

This is an International Rotary project whose aim is "To provide humanitarian aid worldwide in the form of shelter, warmth and comfort to people displaced by natural and other disasters". Recent events in Myanmar(Burma) and China has resulted in approximately 3000 boxes being sent out from the UK, each box providing shelter/support for 10 persons.

On both days the club was able to show the contents of one of the shelter boxes to the public and erected the tent contained in each box.

On Saturday 14th June we were visited by the Town's Deputy Mayor, Dr Michael Kellaway Marriott, who had a look around the tent and box contents and talked to a number of Club members about the project.

The above picture shows Club member (and local Shelter box representative) Mr Clive Morris and the Deputy Mayor.

In total, £309.15 was collected and this will be put towards the Club's donation to Shelter box, who are one of the Club's chosen good causes to support this year.

The Club would like to thank the members of the public who donated and those who stopped to find out more information Shelter box and Rotary in general.
